... thinking of switching over to Beta Blogger now, seems we are all going that way in the not so distant future. Thought I might get in before the diaspora. Any thoughts, problems, pain, loss of limbs etc?

My advice would be GO FOR IT! Beta Blogger is not available to everyone yet, so if you've got the option, I think it will more than likely be quite exciting to try. And you get to provide feedback and you'll more than likely be listened to.
No Skint, you wouldn't have heard of it because it is obviously for the elite of the blogerati!!
I know, sounds like something to stop your heart from exploding. It is however, an upgraded Blogger or somesuch, with added fandoogles which I probably won't be able to operate, knowing my level of un-expertise.
I like new buttons to push but I is a-feared that if I push this one then I may disappear up me own wassname!!
Turn my head, tell me wordpress won't eat my comments or that typepad won't go into reverse at 5-6pm - I'm up for a change!!
I reckon it's probably worth a go. At Beta stage it's at least had most of the bugs ironed out of it. Besides, they say they will eventually migrate everyone to the new system. I'm probably going to convert over the weekend - I can't wait to get rid of that damned "publishing content" *clock*. My only worry is whether zoomclouds, flickr etc will still work with the new blogger system - they say to check - would be nicer if they said,"yes, it works!" But hey, I guess that's humans for you.
I am very out of date now (ie what I am about to write is 2 weeks old, stone age in the blogospheric world) but I have some postings on some tecchy blogs somewhere about beta blogger and what you can do with it,,, will try to retrieve them from the 2-week-old slush pile accumulated in my absence and send them to you or put them on Petrona or somewhere. I think they are supposed to allow subject tagging now, aren't they? I do recommend Wordpress and Typepad, though, I find them both more stable, quicker and with more bells/whistles than blogger (where I had my blog for about 4 months). Wordpress is free. Typepad is about 2 pounds a month.

Minx: What's Beta Blogger, please?
never hear of it - you must be one of the secret cabal that runs the world - aren't you supposed to keep that sort of stuff to yourself

Well, Blogger has its moments, but at least I know the problems. Don't want to train new blog software and find out they have problems, too. ;)
