Hepworth

Having a friend to stay from out of town often means a lovely excuse to dip into local culture. Apart from showing Linda every sheep on the southern peninsula we also found time to have lunch in St Ives and wander around the Barbara Hepworth Sculpture Garden.

It's not often that I rave about sculpture, or any art for that matter, but this is something special and every time I visit the garden there is always something new to see, some new angle to discover.
Barbara Hepworth was unique. A close friend of Picasso, Henry Moore and married to the artist Ben Nicholson, Hepworth became part of the close knit St Ives set producing some of her finest work.

Trewyn Studio was both home and studio. The large garden became a canvas for her work, showing the natural form and fluidity that reflects the 'pagan' coast that surrounded her home.

The installations in the garden change with light and season.Barbara died in 1975 but her amazing art goes on and is a delight. It is well worth a visit if you are down this way.

Her work looks stunning and I love sculpture. D insists that he wants to visit Cornwall when we come over later this year so I think we'll definitely pay the sculpture garden a visit. Thanks for the heads up!

The piece in the top picture looks like a sculpture featured sensually in the wonderfully liberating movie, Harold and Maud, the greatest tribute to intergenerational sex ever. Thanks for the reminder/

I really like seeing the sculpture in the garden. The elements seem to add something to each other.
The last pic is my fave.
What, no sheep?

thanks for the primer on Ms. Hepworth. I wasn't aware of her work..somehow in the pursuit of my art degree, i managed to avoid a lot of art History classes...and painting/printmaking was more my thing. But if I ever find myself in Cornwall, I'll be sure to stop by.

That's strange. My me and muvver were just talking last night about how we'd love to go to St. Ives again (went to Cornwall a lot as a kid) so if it does come off, I'll definitely give this place a visit. I love gardens and the sculptures look beautiful. Thanks for letting us know about it :)

Great to read this.
As you know, although I live up north, I know St Ives well and love the place...it's been part of my life as LONG as my life!
Re Hepworth: Decades ago, my dad and I were invited in to a studio one hot and lazy pm....we drank tea/ate cakes and although Im no longer able to check with my lovely dad, Im pretty sure we met Hepworth and Nicholson..I see still the strong colours, oranges, crimson, the startling yellows...
And I agree, the garden's lovely and also the workshop...
OH DEAR!
I want to go NOW!!
